20 years after the Alliance was formed, the cost of constructing new space stations is becoming unbearable. In order to improve the economy, the Alliance has decided to rebuild and recolonize some of the planets who were destroyed during the war. Those planets were once prosperous, so by reviving them, the Alliance is hoping to acquire much needed funds and resources.
In New Dawn – a thematic sequel of Among the Stars and part of the Among the Stars Universe series – each player owns an intergalactic company undertaking massive construction and transportation projects. Through contracts, each player will have the chance to build resource-gathering facilities, colonies, immense space stations and transport resources, ambassadors, military and civilians to every corner of the galaxy. Most projects are so demanding that a player will often have to partner with his opponents in order to meet the tight deadlines.
In the game, each player begins with five cards, with each card allowing him to perform a different action. The player must keep 3 of these cards which he/she will play this turn and pass the remaining 2 to his opponents for drafting. This way each player will receive 2 new cards which will form the new five card hand for his/her next turn.
The game takes place on a large (80x60cm) board full of planets and asteroids, that are randomly placed on it for variation. Several planets also have orbiting space stations, which offer additional actions when docked with. Each player also has his own game board to track his contributions to the projects in which he participates. Each player also has two ships which he/she uses to transport resources and worker teams throughout the board.
Each turn, players can undertake their own contracts or choose to participate on their opponents' projects. Each project has a deadline measured in turns, and failure to meet that deadline results in negative victory points for all involved players. If the project is completed in time, each player receives victory points and other bonuses; in addition, the players who worked the most on the project receive extra bonuses.
Each player also owns storage space on the "Barge Ship", which moves around the galaxy making deliveries. By loading and trading with the Barge Ship, players can perform more actions and fulfill contracts without having to spend action cards.
During the game each player also has the option to recruit new worker teams needed for the projects. Worker teams can also be transported to planets with resources and help the player by loading goods on his ships.
After a number of turns, the game ends and the player with the most victory points wins.
